Augmentative & Alternative Communication describes a wide range of techniques which can be used to support spoken communication. These include gesture, signing, symbols/word communication books/charts as well as output communication aids (VOCAS)ipads.
The two main types of AAC Systems are:
UNAIDED COMMUNICATION
Body Language, facial expression, pointing and signing
AIDED COMMUNICATION
(Low tech or high tech)
Pictures or symbol books, voice output communication aid such as an iPad with clicker communicator symbol app.
MAKATON
Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech in spoken word order.
BENEFITS OF MAKATON
Using signs can help people who have no speech or whose speech is unclear. Many people then drop the signs naturally at their own pace, as they develop speech.
It also supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory recall and organisation of language and expression.
Makaton is highly flexible as it can be personalised to the individual’s needs and used at a level suitable for them. Makaton can be a revelation and a bridge to greater confidence and self-esteem.
